Melanoma Alternative Treatments

What is Melanoma?

This is a form of cancer that begins in melanocytes (cells that make the pigment melanin). It might begin in a mole (skin melanoma), but it can also begin in other pigmented tissues, such as in the eye or even in the intestines. Many studies show the people living in a more sunny climate actually have less skin cancer because of the increased intake of Vitamin D3. However what is the underlying cause of skin cancer as is the case with most cancer is a poor diet of high trans fats, sugar and processed foods. The best time to sun bath is early in the morning and later in the evening when you avoid the more harmful rays of the sun. Pure virgin coconut or sesame seed oils are good to use when sun tanning. Never stay more than 20 or 30 minutes directly in the sun. Take your time and be reasonable. A little sun is good, too much weakens and lowers the immune system.

What are the symptoms of Melanoma?

There is often a change in the size, color, shape, or feel of an existing mole or the appearance of a new growth or mole on your skin.

If you see any change in a mole's appearance or the growth of a new mole it may be a sign of skin cancer. Suspicious moles or freckles should be checked by a Health Care Professional. Keep in mind that Melanomas may form from an existing mole or freckle, or begin to grow from a normal-appearing area of the skin.

How can you tell the difference between Melanomas and normal mole?

  • Moles and freckles usually are brown or black and have a defined edge or border.
  • Also Melanomas usually are multi-colored. They might combine different shades of brown and black, sometimes with areas of red, blue, or white. Also keep in mind that they often have an irregular or uneven border.
  • It is important to be alert for moles or freckles that ooze fluid or blood, crust or clot over, and then ooze or bleed again and don't heal-they could be a sign of cancer.

Melanomas often show these 4 symptoms commonly called the ABCD symptoms:

  • 1. A - Asymmetry, when one half of the growth has a different shape than the other.
  • 2. B - Border irregular, when the growth has scalloped or uneven edges.
  • 3. C - Color varied, when the growth is more than one color. Melanomas may be black, shades of brown and tan, and even have specks of red, white, and blue.
  • 4. D - Diameter, when the size, measured edge to edge, is bigger than the diameter of a pencil eraser.
