What Is Esophageal Cancer?

Please take note that there are actually two types of esophageal cancer which are squamous cell carcinoma (cancer that begins in flat cells lining the esophagus) and adenocarcinoma (cancer that begins in cells that make and release mucus and other fluids). Esophageal Cancer is the type that forms in tissues lining the esophagus (the muscular tube through which food passes from the throat to the stomach).

Stage I. cancer is found only in the top layers of cells lining the esophagus.

Stage II. cancer involves the deeper layers of the lining of the esophagus, or in some cases it has spread to nearby lymph nodes. However the cancer has not spread to other parts of the body.

Stage III. Now the cancer has invaded more deeply into the wall of the esophagus or it has spread to tissues or lymph nodes close to the esophagus. It has however not spread to other parts of the body yet.

Stage IV. Finally the cancer has now spread to other parts of the body. It is understand that Esophageal cancer can spread almost anywhere in the body, including the liver, lungs, brain, and bones.

What Are The Symptoms Of Esophageal Cancer?

It should be noted that early esophageal cancer usually does not cause symptoms, but as the cancer grows, symptoms may include:

You have difficulty swallowing and/or it is painful
You experience severe weight loss
You start having pain in the throat or back, behind the breastbone or also between the shoulder blades
You have hoarseness or suffer from chronic cough
You start vomiting
Also you might start coughing up blood
