The Budwig Diet

The Budwig Center teaches the Budwig diet which has been successfully helping people with Cancer, Arthritis, Asthma, Fibromyalgia, Diabetes, Blood Pressure, Multiple sclerosis, Heart Disease, Psoriasis, Eczema, Acne and other illnesses and conditions.

To start the diet, you will need to have 3 appliances:

  • A coffee bean grinder to grind the flaxseeds.
  • An immersion hand-held blender (a stick-shaped mixer) It's important to use an electric mixer rather than stirring by hand.
  • A Juice Machine. A masticating type juicer is said to give a more healthful juice than a centrifugal type. If you do not have this type of juicer the BUDWIG CENTER can help you locate one.

Budwig Diet Flaxseed Oil and Cottage Cheese (FOCC) or quark:



Generally, each tablespoon of Flaxseed Oil (FO) is blended with 2 or more tablespoons of low-fat organic Cottage Cheese (CC) or quark.

That is a ratio of approximately 1:2. Cold-pressed refrigerated liquid FO is used, for example, Barlean's & Spectrum. It's better to buy regular FO instead of High Lignan FO. Healthier lignans are obtained at a lower cost by using freshly ground flaxseeds. Ground seeds must be used within 15 minutes.


A TYPICAL DAY ON THE BUDWIG PROTOCOL


Note: Whenever Tablespoons are mentioned it is the standard US tablespoon which is the equivalent of the British "dessert" spoon.

1 US Tablespoon = 15 ml and 1 British Tablespoon is 18 ml - 16 tablespoons = cup and 4 tablespoons = 1/4 cup.

Start the day - 2 glasses of pure water. Next drink the pure juice of 1/2 a lemon (if you find the lemon juice taste strong you could drink a little more water afterwards). Another option is 1 Tbps of natural apple cider vinegar in a glass of water. These help balance the body's PH and assists in better digestion.

Next drink a 1/4 glass (2oz/63ml) of natural sauerkraut juice which has cancer-fighting benefits and also improves digestion.

5 min later - drink a glass (250 ml) of green tea to which a little lemon juice has been added (lemon juice potentiates the benefits of the green tea). Next drink 2 oz/63 ml of Essiac tea in hot water. It provides warm liquid required for the ground flaxseeds to swell properly, which is important.

BREAKFAST - Enjoy a serving of the original Budwig Muesli of Flaxseed oil and quark (Many other breakfast recipes will be provided for you in our BUDWIG CANCER GUIDE).

  • To make the Budwig Muesli, blend 3 Tablespoons (British dessert spoons) of flaxseed oil (FO) with 6 Tbps low-fat Quark or Cottage Cheese (CC) with a hand-held immersion electric blender for up to a minute If the mixture is too thick and/or the oil does not disappear you may need to add 2 or 3 Tablespoons of milk (goat milk would be the best option). Do not add water or juices when blending FO with CC or quark. The mixture should be like rich whipped cream with no separated oil. Remember you must mix ONLY the FO and CC and nothing else at first. Always use organic food products when possible.
  • Now once the FO and CC are well mixed grind 2 Tbps of whole flaxseeds and add to the mixture. Please note that freshly ground flaxseeds must be used within 20 minutes after being ground or they will become rancid. Therefore do not grind up flaxseeds ahead of time and store.
  • Next mix in by hand or with the blender 1 teaspoon of honey (raw non-pasteurized is recommended)
  • (Optional) For variety you may add other ingredients such as sugar free apple sauce, cinnamon, vanilla, lemon juice, chopped almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, cashews (no peanuts), pine kernels, rosehip-marrow. For people who find the Budwig Muesli hard to take these added foods will make the mixture more palatable. Some of our patients have even added a pinch of Celtic sea salt and others put in a pinch of cayenne pepper for a change
  • (Optional) Dr. Harvey Diamond who wrote a book on the importance of "food combining" and other experts recommend not mixing fruit with other foods (they say to eat fruit on its own on an empty stomach and wait 10 minutes before eating other foods) If however you do not have any digestion problems you may want to add various fruits, especially berries fresh or frozen. No more than 1 cup of fruit should be added.
  • (Optional) Add ground up Apricot kernels (no more than 6 kernels per day). Or you may decide to eat these apricot kernels on their own

Nausea - Some people get nausea from the ground flaxseeds, to counter this by taking a small bowl of papaya immediately afterwards. Also put a lot of papaya into the morning muesli too, it may be there is a special enzymes in the papaya that quells the nausea.

Mid Morning - Drink a glass of freshly-pressed vegetable juice from carrots and/or beet, celery, lemon, apple as well as green vegetables - lettuces or spinach. You may want to purchase a book on vegetable and fruit juice combinations. Add 10 spears of green asparagus in with the vegetable juice (if fresh asparagus is not available use frozen or canned. Asparagus is a powerful anti-cancer food) Add 1 teaspoon of Wheat Grass powder. Take the different herbal formulas (such as turmeric, ginger, cayenne, etc) recommended by the Budwig Center with your juice or with water.

Morning Exercise if not too weak - Dr. Budwig did encourage gentle exercise such as walking. However she wrote: "I would never allow a cancer patient with metastases to jog, ride a bicycle.." The exercise program should be tailored to your personal condition. The CHI Energy machine, the Rebounder (mini-trampoline) is not recommended if you have had recent surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, advanced osteoporosis or suffer from metastases. Budwig Center will evaluate your condition and offer suggestions. At Budwig Center we put a lot of emphasis on detoxifying your body. FIR Infrared therapy systems are provided as they get rid itself of an accumulation of potentially carcinogenic heavy metals such as lead, mercury, zinc, nickel, cadmium, as well as alcohol, nicotine, sodium, sulfuric acid lead, copper, aluminum, pesticide residues, petroleum-based toxins, chloride, fluoride, as well as fat and cholesterol. No wonder the famous Greek physician, Parmenides, stated: "Give me the power to create fever and I shall cure any disease". After your shower and skin brushing paint on Lugol's iodine over breast/chest stomach area each day until it no longer sinks into the skin by the next morning. Drink plenty of water and drink 2 oz/63 ml of Essiac tea in hot water.

SUNLIGHT - 10 -15 minutes of sunshine on the entire front of the body and then on the back of the body (where as little clothes as possible). Use no sunscreen or sunglasses (virgin coconut oil could be used if you burn easily). Dr. Budwig discovered the affinity of the human body with the sun. If the body has the right balance of oils and proteins, it has a magnetic field which attracts the photons in sunlight and thus is open to the healing powers of the sun and stimulating the natural production of Vitamin D. It's interesting to note that when you body has sufficient omega 3 from the flaxseed oil there is less risk of sun burning and reactions to the sun.

Enemas - In the morning (or when you have time) do a pure natural water enema (3 glasses of water) then right after put 3 cups of warm coffee into the enema bag and do a coffee enema. Flaxseed enemas were also used by Dr. Budwig (Budwig Cancer Guide provides detailed instructions on these different types of enemas and their purpose)

Before Lunch - Drink a glass of fruit juice to which two Tbps of freshly ground flaxseeds have been added. Also sparkling wine or champagne to which 2 Tbps of flaxseed oil has been added is recommended for those with brain tumours or who are weak and for improved digestion.

NOON/LUNCH - A cup of warm green or herbal tea and right after drink 2 oz (63ml) of Pau D'arco tea added to a glass of hot water. Use a little honey if desired (no sugar). Make Pau D'Arco tea by pouring 1 cup of boiling water over 1-3 teaspoons of herb and cover. After 10-15 minutes strain, add a little honey if desired. Drink 2-3 cups daily.

10 min later - Drink your second glass (250ml) of the vegetable juice. Eat a RAW vegetable salad. Sprinkle some yeast flakes over the salad. (See Budwig Cancer Guide for salad dressing recipes and an ample choice of noon meal suggestions.)

Lunch Dessert - The Budwig Muesli is to be eaten two times a day. You may want to eat your second serving at noon as a dessert by adding different berries or chocolate, vanilla or other natural foods.

Mid Afternoon - Drink a glass of fruit juice to which two Tbps whole flaxseeds, freshly ground. In the afternoon, drink another 63 ml/2oz Pau D'arco tea.

BUDWIG COURSE - 3:45 PM - Our shuttle service will pick you up to bring you to the Budwig Center. Please be outside your place of stay by 3:45 PM. If you have your own transport please try and be at the clinic by 4:00 PM.

Evening Meal - Drink a glass (250ml) of the vegetable juice along with the recommended herbal capsules that Budwig Center has suggested for you. Prepare Budwig approved recipes (see Budwig Cancer Guide) which would include vegetable soup and other foods such as, buckwheat, millet, brown rice, lentils, beans, peas, yams & potatoes, kale, tomatoes, spinach, beets, carrots, chard, cabbage, brussel sprouts, broccoli, onions, artichokes, asparagus, peppers, green beans, etc. Use only wholesome herbs such as cayenne pepper, paprika, and turmeric along with Celtic or Himalayan sea salt.

Dr. Budwig allowed a small amount of other cheeses about 2 ounces (56 grams) per day of a high quality cheese, like Emmentaler, Goat, Gesha, Gouda, Herb Cheese, Sbrinz, Camembert, Gervais, Brie. However many have opted not to eat any additional dairy products. It would be discreet to limit your intake and have cheese as a treat now and then. For the most enzymes and nutrients, don't heat the cheese and be sure not to buy processed cheese.

Early Evening (optional) a glass of organic red wine (helpful in combating insomnia as well).

AVOID UNHEALTHY FOODS


NO hydrogenated oils, NO trans-fats, NO Olive oil (cold pressed sunflower seed oil or coconut oil is recommended), NO animal fats NO meats, NO chicken, NO fish (Fish is not recommended in the diet, but Dr. Budwig said that when traveling, if there are not good choices of foods in a restaurant, then occasionally fresh fish could be consumed, but remove the skin as the toxins are in the skin. But, for the most part, animal proteins should be kept to a minimum as they can promote cancer.) Pasta is eliminated, as is white bread, wheat products, (use Spelt instead) etc. Corn is very discouraged (because of high pesticide usage on corn crops). NO eggs, NO butter, NO ice cream, NO cane sugar, white sugar, molasses, maple syrup, xylitol, preservatives, NO processed foods (NO pastries), NO Soy milk or Soy products (unless fermented) pesticides and chemicals, even those in household products & cosmetics. NO microwave, NO Teflon or aluminium cooking ware or foil. We recommend and provide during your stay at Budwig Center enamel cooking ware. Drink chemical-free water.

Many of the soy products available in the food supply in the West have been treated with harsh shortcuts. They can have suppressive effects on the thyroid and, by extension, the immune system. They have significant amounts of glutamate in them and have effects similar to MSG, which is an exitatory neurotoxin. Even traditionally fermented soy products have a down side and are linked to various forms of neurological atrophy. Broad based population studies in China have indicated increased incidence of Alzheimer related syndromes in populations with the greatest consumption of soy. In addition the phytic acid in soy can chelate calcium from the system.

Avoid leftovers - food should be prepared fresh and eaten soon after preparation to maximize intake of health-giving electrons & enzymes and avoid problems with harmful bacteria accumulation in leftover foods.

Dr. Budwig warned against using her protocol in conjunction with other therapies that could go against the benefits of her formula. Oxygen therapies, Laetrile (Vitamin B17 injections), Vitamin C infusions and most supplements should not be combined with the program. Check with the Budwig Center if you are not sure.
